Using Your HSA/FSA for Glasses and Vision Care
FAQ #1: What are HSAs and FSAs?
Answer: A Health Savings Account (HSA) is for individuals with a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), while a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is not limited to a certain type of health plan.
HSAs and FSAs are pre-tax accounts you can use to pay for your current health expenses and save for future qualified medical expenses.
FAQ #2: Does my eye care fall under a “qualified medical expense”?
Answer: Yes!! The amount you pay for contact lenses, eye exams, eyeglasses, and prescription sunglasses can be included in medical expenses.
You can also include the cost of materials such as saline solution and enzyme cleaner, as well as the amount you pay for eye surgery to treat defective vision.
Our opticians can provide an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider.
FAQ #3: What happens if I have an unused balance in my HSA/FSA at the end of the year?
Answer: The unused balance in a Health Savings Account automatically rolls over year after year, but Flexible Spending Account dollars are more likely to be “use it or lose it.”
