Dr. Toni Albrecht, OD, talks to Bustle about dry eyes
There are plenty of reasons for dry eyes, from the extreme cold we’re experiencing this winter to too much screen time. Our very own Dr. Toni Albrecht, OD, shared the 20/20/20 rule with Bustle, which will help you combat the negative effects of screen time and dry eyes.
To give your eyes a rest, it can help to do the 20/20/20 trick. “Take a break every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away for about 20 seconds,” Dr. Toni Albrecht, OD, of InVision Distinctive Eyewear, tells Bustle. “When you’re focused back on your screen, make a conscious effort to blink to help prevent dry eyes.”

Finding the perfect fit with The World of Doug
Doug Marshall lands on Face à Face frames for a new, refreshed look
We recently had the absolute pleasure of connecting with Doug Marshall, aka The World of Doug, a fashionable and fun Twin Cities local. Doug was looking to switch up his frames and invest in a more updated, timeless and fitting look.
Our North Loop team worked with Doug, considering his style, face shape, coloring and personality, to find the perfect fit. The end result? A round, thick frame from Face à Face in a grey-green gradient.
Face à Face frames are handmade in France. The incredible duo behind the brand, Pascal Jaulent and Nadine Roth, teamed up to craft a beautiful collection that is both bold and delicate.
Fitting Frames for a few of our Favorite Golden Globe Nominees and Winners
Reimagining our favorite characters with glasses.
It’s officially award season. Yesterday marked the 76th Golden Globe Awards and it was a star-studded, magnificent, and incredibly fashionable event. Our team got together to select frames for a handful of this year’s nominees. Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” – Won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Bradley Cooper, “A Star is Born” – Nominated for Best Performance by an Actor, Drama, and Best Director, Motion Picture

The frames showcase his brio and fame, and the gold color a staple of the Los Angeles aesthetic.
Constance Wu, “Crazy Rich Asians” – Nominated for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

New InVision in the North Loop!
We didn't move far - just 200 feet!
We are thrilled to announce that InVision Distinctive Eyewear has relocated in the North Loop and is now open in a beautiful new space, located on the corner of Washington Ave. N. and 2nd St. N., next to Edwards Dessert Kitchen.
Located at street level in one of the oldest buildings in Minneapolis, the new InVision has a tremendous amount of character, including soaring 14-foot-high ceilings, timeworn exposed brick – dating back to 1879 – and floor-to-ceiling windows that welcome in soft, natural sunlight.
At 1500 square feet, the new store is one-third larger than the previous North Loop location, allowing us to build out a state-of-the-art, on-site optometrist office – the first eye doctor in the North Loop! InVision customer parking is available in the parking lot behind the building and is accessible from 2nd Ave. N.
InVision’s new North Loop home – like the other three Twin Cities stores – was thoughtfully designed by InVision Owner Anthony Bosca. The store’s shelving, displays and counters were made specifically for the new space by a local millworker, and Anthony personally selected the art decorating the walls, including four works by Minneapolis artist John Alsbach and an original ink print by Donald Salton.
Stop in and visit us in our stunning new store, located at 204 N. Washington Ave., Monday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m.

4 Things to Know About Summer Eye Care
As the summer heats up, we all know to pack the sunscreen to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. What some may not know is that the sun can be harmful to your eyes and vision too! Here are some summer tips for protecting those baby blues:
1. Keep it 100
Look for glasses that are labeled “100 percent UV Protection”. These specs will do the best job protecting your eyes from the UV rays themselves, not just sunlight. If you want to be extra safe, consider a pair that has side protection – Matsuda has some great and stylish selections – which will prevent rays from entering through the side.
Even if you wear UV-blocking contact lenses, a good pair of shades are essential. Though they can help protect your eyes, UV-blocking contacts can’t do the same amount of heavy lifting that sunglasses do – like protect the delicate skin around your eyes.
3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Part of what makes UV rays so dangerous is that they can quietly add up depending on what the weather is like, what time it is, and even your location. Here are a few quick notes about them so they don’t sneak up on you:
- Sunlight is strongest mid-day to early afternoon. If you’re going out between 10am and 3pm, be especially sure to grab the sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses.
- Water, sand, snow and concrete can reflect 85% of sunlight. If you choose to do a beach day,or even if you’re just at a cafe in the city, those pesky UV rays can be intensified.
Clouds don’t block UV light. If you can’t see the sun, UV rays can’t get to you, right? Not so fast. Though clouds and haze do darken the sky, the sun’s rays pass right on through.
4. Think of the Children!
The sun can be especially harmful to kids – especially when they’re spending more time outside. Even so, 82% of parents coat their children in sunscreen, but only one third make sure their kids wear sunglasses. Making sure your little ones have both when they go out will keep them healthier and happier (and with a whole lot less sunburn).

Understanding Your Eyeglass Prescription
FAQs and FYIs re: the RX for your OD & OS
You already know that an annual eye exam can help keep your eyes healthy and ensure the optimal vision correction, but do you know what those numbers and abbreviations on your vision prescription actually mean?
1. OD and OS
Abbreviations for the Latin terms oculus dexter and oculus sinister, these measurements indicate the correction required for your right eye (OD) and left eye (OS).
2. Sphere (SPH)
The SPH, or sphere, measures the amount of lens power prescribed to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness.
Corrections for nearsighted vision have a negative value (for example -4.00), while those for farsighted vision have positive values (i.e. +2.00). In general, the further your value is from 0, the worse your eyesight and stronger the correction.
3. Cylinder (CYL)
On your vision prescription, the cylinder (CYL) measurement corrects astigmatism. If your prescription doesn’t have a cylinder value, you either don’t have astigmatism, or it’s so slight that it doesn’t need to be corrected with lenses.
What is Astigmatism?
The majority of eyeglasses wearers have some degree of astigmatism. Instead of being perfectly round and smooth, like a ping pong ball, eyes with astigmatism have a more oblong shape, like a football. The irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly in the back of your eye, which can cause blurry or double vision, eye strain or headaches.
If your prescription has a cylinder value, it will also have an axis measurement. The axis value is between 1-180 and indicates the degree or angle of astigmatism, where 90° is the vertical center of your eye and 180° is the horizontal center.
5. Pupil Distance (PD)
Exactly what it sounds like, PD measures the distance, in millimeters, between your pupils. Pupil distance is an important part of your optical prescription and ensures your lenses are made specifically to give you the best possible vision correction.
The Future is Clear
Fresh takes from the international spring eyewear show.
Our recent trip to Vision Expo East in NYC left us feeling invigorated after getting an exclusive sneak peek at some of the newest collections and latest tech advancements in optics.
What does this mean for Twin Cities glasses wearers? Read on to find out.
1. Fit and flair are the name of the game
Round shapes continue to be the frontrunner in eyewear, but they really pop with the season’s hottest colors. Ladies are blushing in pinks and lavenders. And men are keeping it cool with gray tones when they’re not wearing the trendy mashup of forest green and dark brown.
If metals are your preferred make, gold and matte are best. After its time as an edgy, specialty color, gold is becoming an eye-wearer’s staple. InVision designers see the trend sticking around and are coming up with everything from bling-tastic 24-karat plated titanium to muted finishes that wear as easily as tortoise to keep this look fresh.
2. Hot off the press
It’s impossible to choose a “best new collection” when both Caroline Abram and Cyril and Dayne are coming to InVision shelves. The eye-catching collections were among the most popular at the expo; both displays were swarming!
Caroline Abram makes French fashion accessible to anyone with a big personality with her fun, elegant shapes and lively colors. Her oversized wire frames make us swoon (and Oprah’s a big fan!) See the collection at InVision Galleria.
Making their Minnesota debut at InVision in Fall 2018, Cyril and Dayne frames are handmade in Italy. Made with beautiful Mazzucchelli acetate in gorgeous color combinations, Cyril and Dayne eyewear is bold yet traditional and easy to wear.
3. Our favorite?
The collection we’re most excited about is Matsuda. The Japanese brand’s vintage-modern mash-ups capture the heritage of the brand yet remain fresh and current – a mix that’s hard to find. If we had to pick a frame, the ophthalmic aviator in antique gold takes the cake. Add a little tortoise on the temple of these Japanese titanium frames and you have a timeless look that works for any occasion, at any age.
Stylish + Sustainable
Every day is Earth Day.
At InVision, we’re picky about the optical designers we work with.
Not only do we look for companies who share some of our core values, including quality, value, fit and aesthetic integrity, we also choose to work with manufacturers who have a thoughtful, ethical and sustainable workflow.
1. Think Globally
Many of InVision’s designers – including Matsuda (Japan), Götti (Switzerland), Face à Face (France) and WOOW (Italy) – are based in countries with very strict environmental controls – usually more stringent than the United States. These manufacturers manage their water usage, energy consumption and pollution to reduce their effect on the environment.
Additionally, by working with designers in Europe and Japan, we know the frames we sell are manufactured by people who earn a living wage, have access to quality healthcare and family leave, and work in a factory that is clean, bright and, most importantly, safe.
2. Act Locally
Feel even better about your new pair of glasses. Drop off your old frames at any InVision store – Galleria, Minnetonka, North Loop or Grand Ave. and we will gladly donate them to the Lions Club. In the Twin Cities, Lions Club volunteers distribute the recycled glasses to people in need in low and middle income communities.
3. Sustainable Quality
FEB31st eyewear is handcrafted from sustainably-harvested wood by optical artisans in Italy. Exclusive to InVision in the Twin Cities, FEB31st frames are completely customizable.
Rather than storing excess inventory and materials, FEB31st produces bespoke spectacles to the wearer’s specifications, including color palette and color blocking; the type of nosepiece and the length of the stems.

Lunor’s latest collection of hand-crafted eyewear sparkles with details. Each set features four layers of fine metals, a high-gloss finish and specially designed screw rests that help your new glasses last longer.

Blossoming Spring Styles
Spring has finally sprung!
Even though it doesn’t feel much like spring, we’re ready to sport these stellar new styles.
1. Round Up
Round and nearly round frames make a comeback for spring. Frames that are perfectly circular make a bold statement – modified round shapes are easier to wear. Channel the vibrant, retro styles in handcrafted eyewear from Thierry Lasry and Robert Marc.
2. Tinted Shades
Your surroundings are about to get more colorful! Tinted shades in colors like violet and green are popping up all over our spring style radar. They brighten any outfit and give us early 2000s vibes, but with an elevated edge. To add a touch of color to your ensemble, stop into one of our stores and slip on a pair of sunglasses from American designers Robert Marc or SALT.
3. Pretty in Pastel
The new season and pastels go hand-in-hand. Spring 2018 is opting for less flashy frames and trending towards lighter hues, and we have unique, handcrafted eyewear that you won’t find anywhere else in the Twin Cities, including stunning styles from Matsuda and Leisure Society.

Celebrating Iconic Women
This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating some of the women we love (and their statement eyewear!)
1. Throw Serious Shade
Becky who? Beyonce slays all day in bold eyewear like POTENTIALLY from Thierry Lasry. Stop in to any of our four Twin Cities boutique for a fun and personalized eyewear shopping experience. We promise to treat you like the VIP you are and help you find a new pair of sunnies that make you feel like the Queen Bey.
2. Shine Like a Diamond
Oprah’s eyewear choices are always on point (or should we say presidential?) Every InVision optician participates in ongoing education to ensure we’re up-to-speed on the latest designs, materials and lens technology. We know that when you have superior-fitting frames, you’ll get the best vision correction.
3. Own Your Style
Why does Iris Apfel’s love her signature oversized frames? As she told Who What Wear in 2016, “If you’re gonna wear glasses, wear glasses!”
Some shops – online retailers especially – would like you to believe that lenses are a one-size-fits-all proposition. The truth is, lenses are complicated, precision instruments that come in a dizzying range of designs, materials, base curves and coatings. Let our professional opticians help you find a fabulous pair of frames that enhances your personal style and corrects your specific vision needs.
Anthony On: Götti Switzerland
Elegance and refinement. Special, but understated.
Understated yet effortlessly refined, Götti Switzerland eyewear feels both modern and timeless.
Fall in Love with New Frames
Love is in the air!
Here are some of our favorite frames for Valentine’s Day.
1. Rose-Colored Glasses
From pastel pink to magenta, from to ruby to maroon, red frames have come a long way since Sally Jessy Raphael! The color of love is the perfect accent for neutral wardrobes, and looks amazing in photos. Feeling fierce? Make a statement in translucent red (WOOW, Show Case 2) or bold burgundy (Matsuda, M2022). For a modern yet timeless style, try Götti (SALY).
2. Try Something New
Keep things exciting in 2018 – trade in your solid plastic frames for a more sophisticated look. Layers of high-quality acetate give Robert Marc eyewear a rich, beautiful depth, while Face à Face blends opaque, solid and semi-transparent materials to create styles that are très chic.
Or, choose to go au naturale with beautiful, naturally occuring materials: FEB31st frames are made entirely from sustainably harvested wood, and Lucas de Stael embraces leather, cork, stone and stingray skin.
3. “Eye” Love You
February is Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) month. AMD is the leading cause of blindness among older Americans, but new treatments mean that’s no longer the case, especially if it’s detected early. Make an appointment with one of InVision’s awesome ODs at our Galleria, Grand Ave. or Minnetonka stores.
Anthony On: Lunor
Vintage Inspiration, Exceptional Craftsmanship
Handmade in Germany, Lunor eyewear is inspired by classic vintage frames of the 20s and 30s.
Five Things to Know About Glaucoma
Early detection can delay vision loss and prevent blindness from glaucoma.
Annual eye exams test the clarity of vision, eye movement, eye pressure and look for any signs of more serious eye conditions, including glaucoma. Detecting these symptoms early can help protect your eyes from severe vision loss.
Here are five things to know about glaucoma:
- Glaucoma occurs when the nerve connecting the eye to the brain is damaged, usually due to high eye pressure.
- Glaucoma is sometime referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because symptoms are not immediately apparent and often go unnoticed.
- Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma, the most common type of glaucoma, is hereditary and affects about 2.2 million people in the U.S.
- Optometrists use a tonometer – the ‘puff’ test – to measure the pressure in your eyes.
- Early detection and treatment can help protect your eyes from severe vision loss.

Don't let the money in your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) go to waste!
Read up on some of the most common questions our customers have about year-end flex spending.
FAQ #1: Can I use my flex dollars on sunglasses, readers or non-prescription eyewear?
Answer: It completely depends on how your plan is set up with your employer. Some companies cover readers, some plans include sunglasses with UV protection and some cover eyeglasses and sunglasses with a valid prescription. It is best to check with your employer to see what your plan covers.
InVision tip: You may be able to divide up your glasses payments between two years. If your plan covers a frame without prescription lenses, you could pay for the frame in 2017 and the lenses in 2018.
FAQ #2: How do I get reimbursed for my purchases?
Answer: Most companies issue their employees a “Benny” card that is pre-loaded with the annual FSA balance and works just like a Visa debit card.
If your FSA plan doesn’t include a debit card, InVision will provide an itemized statement that you can submit for reimbursement through your employer.
FAQ #3: When do my flex dollars run out?
Answer: For most plans, flex dollars must be used before your current healthcare coverage period ends (typically on December 31.) Some FSA plans may offer a grace period of up to 75 days.
InVision Tip: Don’t wait until the last minute to find your new glasses – the year-end crunch may leave you feeling rushed and unsure about your decision!

What’s Your “Eye-Q”?
5 Parts of a Comprehensive Eye Exam
Professional optometrists recommend comprehensive annual eye exams because many eye conditions exist without signs or symptoms, and catching them early can help save and strengthen your eyesight.
Here is what to expect when you schedule an appointment with one of InVision’s top-notch optometrists.
- The exam begins with a discussion about your health history, followed by preliminary tests based on your answers. Be sure to let your optometrist (OD) know if there’s a history of eye disease in your family.
- Then, the doctor uses an eye chart to determine how clearly each eye is seeing and prescribe the appropriate correction will be to help you with nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
- Next, a binocular microscope called a slit lamp will show the doctor the structure of your eye to screen for eye diseases and check the overall health of your eye.
- Then, the doctor will screen for glaucoma with a tonometry or “puff” test, which measures the pressure in your eye.
- Lastly, the doctor will dilate your pupils to get a better view of the internal eye structures and make sure everything looks healthy. TIP: After dilation your eyes will be extremely sensitive to light, so be sure to bring a pair of large sunnies!
- The exam begins with a discussion about your health history, followed by preliminary tests based on your answers. Be sure to let your optometrist (OD) know if there’s a history of eye disease in your family.
After your eye exam, your InVision optometrist will go over their findings with you to clarify the results and answer any questions you have. If additional testing is required, we will always recommend an excellent ophthalmologist to help you further.

Men’s Eyewear Trends
3 Tips to Polish Your Style
Besides being the perfect way to complement suits, ties and casual sportswear, eyeglasses are quickly replacing contact lenses as a stylish addition to both formal and everyday wardrobes.
1. Think Beyond Black
Don’t limit yourself to the idea that black, gray and tortoiseshell are the only suitable eyewear options. More and more men are adding color to their ensembles with sleek and dapper options like clear acetate, dark green, and navy. Classic gentleman should try Robert Marc in seasonal Blue Tundra, Aspen Gray and Vintage Pink Crystal, while trendy guys should opt for designers like FEB31st (pictured) and Face à Face for a more modern aesthetic.
2. Thin Metal Frames
Titanium, stainless steel, sterling silver and platinum frames are an important trend right now. Metal frames are versatile and make it easy to get a look that’s cool and also professional looking. Leisure Society, Gotti (pictured) and SALT offer metal frames ranging from vintage 70s-vibes to updated, modern styles that fit seamlessly into your style. Go for the gold to make a strong statement with frames and accents in rose, yellow and traditional gold.
3. Get the Right Fit
The right fit is essential for eyewear that feels as good as it looks. Precise eye, bridge and temple measurements are key to wearing glasses that won’t feel too loose or snug on your head. Plus, unlike online eyewear retailers, you can get proper measurements, eyewear adjustments and personalized styling tips on the spot when you pick up your InVision frames.

Too much screen time?
5 Tips to Avoid Digital Eye Strain
With the average person spending an overwhelming ten hours a day staring at a screen, almost 90% of Americans are at risk of developing “Digital Eye Strain” from increased time on computers, cell phones and other devices.
As Business Insider explains, Digital Eye Strain can cause real aches and pains – everything from blurred vision and dry eye to eye fatigue and headaches.
Dr. Toni Albrecht, OD, from InVision Distinctive Eyewear suggests 5 easy tips for avoiding digital eye strain:
1. Take a Break
“It’s important to give your eyes regular breaks away from the computer throughout the day. The 20/20/20 rule is an easy way to remember this: Take a break every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. When you’re focused back on your screen, make a conscious effort to blink to help prevent dry eye.”
2. Adjust Display Settings
“Staring at a small font is an easy way to induce eye fatigue and a headache. Boost text size to something that’s comfortable to see without squinting. Remember, screen brightness, contrast and color temperature should all be roughly in sync.”
3. Adjust Workspace
“Position your chair so that your screen is at or below eye level. Screens that are too high can create neck pain for the user since they must tip their head back to see. InVision also offers specialized office lenses – a great option for frequent computer users.”
4. Avoid Blue Light
“It’s common for people to use cell phones or tablets at night while in bed. However, one of the most damaging consequences from this is the prolonged exposure to high energy visible (HEV) light or blue light. An overexposure to this light can lead to retinal damage and macular degeneration (plus, it can throw off your sleep cycle). Avoid viewing digital devices for at least 90 minutes before bed and ask your InVision eye doctor about a lens option to block out harmful blue light.”
5. Consult the Professionals
“An annual eye exam at InVision is a great way to maintain eye health and catch any underlying problems early. Update your doctor if you’re experiencing frequent eye strain and make sure your eyeglass or contact lens prescription is up to date.”

Anthony’s Tips: Sunglasses
Functional, Fashionable and Fabulous
Spring is here…time to sport a new pair of sunnies!
Sunglasses are an important accessory all year round. They help protect your eyes – and the delicate skin around them – from harmful and damaging UV rays (even during colder months).
At InVision, we can tint lenses in pretty much any color you can imagine, including multicolor fades that transition from one color to another. One of Anthony’s personal favorites is a green-grey tint called G15 that renders color very naturally.
Helen Keller Sight Award
Recognizing leaders in restoring and preserving sight.
We would like to thank the Minnesota Lions Club for presenting InVision with the Helen Keller Sight Award, which recognizes businesses, organizations and individuals who help restore and preserve sight.
In 2015, InVision and our clients donated more than 250 pairs of eyeglasses to the Minnesota Lions, who distribute them to the poor in developing countries.
Do you have a pair of eyeglasses that you don’t wear anymore? Clean glasses that are in good shape, with no breaks or major corrosion and still flexible enough to be adjusted without breaking can be dropped off at any of our four stores: Galleria, Grand Ave., Minnetonka or North Loop.
Face à Face Trunk Shows
Thursday through Sunday, January 21-24, 2016
Face à Face frames strike a rare and delicate balance, pushing the boundaries of fashion, yet never overshadowing the face on which they sit. Brilliant combinations of flat and wire titanium, innovative temple details and lively color mean that you will be noticed. Exceptional sensitivity to the character of your face means the frames enhance your appearance instead of defining it.

Three Tips for the Perfect Fit
When it comes to eyewear, finding a frame that fits your face is essential! InVision Distinctive Eyewear owner, Anthony Bosca, says even the smallest adjustments can make a big difference in the comfort of your glasses and the effectiveness of your lens correction.
Before you take your new frames home, keep in mind Anthony’s three tips for a perfect fit:
1. Don’t be afraid to ask.
Can’t decide on a frame shape, size or color? “We love helping our clients make the perfect styling choices, and we’re really good at it!” says Anthony.
2. Try before you buy.
You wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes without trying them on, and they only go on your feet! Give your eyeglasses a test-wear based on your lifestyle. Do they stay in place when you look down at your phone? How do they look with your haircut? Look around the edges of the frame to see how it agrees with the contours of your face.
3. See an expert.
Eyeglasses are not one-size-fits-all! Your optician will adjust your new glasses to ensure they fit properly and don’t cause pressure on your ears or the bridge of your nose. Your vision should be comfortable and effortless.
Whether you want to blend in or make a bold statement, fit is what makes a frame look good on your face. If you want to try something different but can’t find anything that looks right, come to one of InVision’s four Twin Cities locations and explore your options with one of our professional opticians.
We invite you to stop by InVision every two to three months for a quick frame adjustment – on the house!

5 Tips for Stylish Sun Protection
You use sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, but did you know that exposure to sunlight can cause certain types of eye cancer and other optical diseases? Squinting in the bright light doesn’t help, and in fact can result in fine lines and wrinkles.
Protect your eyes with Anthony’s five tips:
1. UV Protection. To provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should block 99% to 100% of UV-A and UV-B rays.
2. Polarization. If you’ve ever squinted at the sun bouncing around the lake or had to look away from the bright reflections in traffic, you know how difficult – and painful – glare can be! Polarized lenses reduce glare by blocking horizontal light waves.
3. Lens Tint. All lens tints are not created equally! Gray and brown are good general purpose tints, but if you’re a skier or snowboarder, you might opt for a rose tint that heightens contrast and depth perception.
4. Size. It’s not just a fashion trend! “Oversized sunglasses are a timeless style, but large lenses do much more than accessorize,” explains Anthony. “Bigger lenses protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them from damaging sunlight.”
5. Style. “Not only do we carry a fabulous selection of designer sunglasses, we also offer custom clips that will turn any pair of eyeglasses we offer into suns,” says Anthony. (Pictured, right)
Protected eyes are healthy eyes, so stop by one of InVision’s four Twin Cities locations to find your next pair of shades.

InVision Coming to the North Loop!
InVision's Fourth Twin Cities Location to Open Winter 2014
Home to a growing number of local and independent stores and restaurants, Minneapolis’s North Loop is a natural fit for InVision Distinctive Eyewear’s fourth Twin Cities boutique.
Home to a growing number of local and independent stores and restaurants, Minneapolis’s North Loop is a natural fit for InVision Distinctive Eyewear’s fourth Twin Cities boutique. Known for providing exceptional service and offering a one-of-a-kind selection of eyewear, InVision’s newest location is scheduled to open Winter 2014 within the D.NOLO cooperative, located in the historic 1912 Northwestern Glass Company building.
Locally owned and operated, InVision carries an exclusive selection of handmade eyewear and glasses for the Twin Cities. Made from exotic materials including leather, horn, wood and titanium, the well-edited collections include designers like Robert Marc, Thierry Lasry, Face á Face and SALT. The frames are consistently seen on many famous faces including Eva Mendez, Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie and Harry Potter (well, Daniel Radcliffe). Twin Cities fans include musician Jeremy Messersmith and MyTalk 107.1’s Jason Matheson, Lori Barghini and Julia Cobbs.
“The vitality and creative energy of the North Loop is irresistible,” said InVision Owner Anthony Bosca. “I knew that I wanted InVision to be a part of it and when I walked into our new space – soaring ceilings, flooded with natural light, but still showing lots of raw industrial materials – it was love at first sight. We are thrilled to join a growing community of amazing shops, but mostly we just can’t wait to meet our neighbors and show them what we’re all about.”
InVision’s North Loop location will be designed by Matt Kreilich of Minneapolis-based Snow Kreilich Architects.
“I always want our stores to feel like they fit in with and reflect the neighborhoods they’re in,” mentioned Bosca. “We’re building a really fun, easy-to-shop store and taking full advantage of this historic building’s natural beauty. Expect an open, flowing floor plan that features original exposed brick walls and warehouse windows.” Bespoke display tables and shelving will beautifully highlight InVision’s curated collections of frames and eyewear accessories.
Also, Bosca knows that eyewear is a critical accessory to any face and that the decision often requires second, third and fourth opinions. “If a client’s shopping buddy can’t be there in person to help pick out a new pair of glasses, our team will take portrait-quality photos of the client in different frames to share with friends and family for feedback. Anyone can snap a phone picture, but we make an extra effort, using networked DSLR cameras and iPads to render attractive, color-accurate images.”
InVision is scheduled to open in the North Loop, at 219 Second Street North, early Winter 2104. The North Loop store joins three other locations in the Twin Cities including Edina’s Galleria, Grand Avenue’s Victoria Crossing in St. Paul and at Hopkins Crossroad and 394 in Minnetonka.

Vintage Modern Gallery
Great things happen when decades collide.
Optical designers continually mine the past for new ideas and strive to put their own spin on classic shapes. Sometimes the result is startlingly fresh, sometimes it’s just a little twist on a theme. Either way, we love wearing frames that express some vintage style, while still feeling effortlessly modern.
Designer: Salt Optics Style: Harlan Col: Black Coffee
This is designer David Rose’s update of an iconic frame. We love the detail on the bridge and the overall proportions. No surprise this makes an incredible sun too and comes with SALT’s excellent polarized lens.
Designer: Harry Lary’s Style:Curvey Col:9004
A classic shape departs from tradition with blue-brown gradient. This has etched metal temples too.
Designer: Lunor Style: 231 Col: 17
This piece form Lunor is more pure vintage than vintage-modern. Pretty though. Note the loop temple ends, which are very comfortable to put on and take off.
Designer: Lunor Style: ll-10 Col: Antique Silver
Perfection. Here a could-not-be-more-tradional silhouette receives a new lease on life from a bold tortoise pattern. This frame works really well for people who look good in warm colors
Designer: Gold & Wood Style: b28.3 Col: Burled Walnut
Gold & Wood modernizes this traditional shape by sharpening and simplifying the lines. Then they knock us out by carving the whole thing from burled walnut. Wow.
Designer: Robert Marc Style: 279 Col: 151
Chunky tortoise. This looks great on both men and women. InVision owner, Anthony and optician Clayton both wear this style.
Minotaure by Lucas de Stael
Made by hand, from vegetable-tanned leather and fully adjustable via concealed steel splines, these frames start out comfortable and get more comfortable with use. Another dazzling expression from one of the most independent and artistic minds in optical design today. Merci bien, Lucas!

Almost every pair of glasses in the world is mass produced. It’s fortunate that industrial technology can now make glasses affordable for hundreds of millions of people around the world. However, there are major quality compromises made in order to produce eyewear cheaply. Sadly, this category also includes most “designer” eyewear and glasses that are sold under licensed brands, some of which is not so inexpensive.
At this level, plastic frames are injection molded, so they want to retain their molded shape and are difficult to adjust for fit. The plastic itself is lower-grade. Metal frames are made from pot-metal, also known as Monel, which is heavy and prone to breaks. Overall fit and finish may be rough, especially after they’ve been worn for a week or so.
This is the category of frames in which InVision specializes. We work with a select group of independent optical designers, each with the experience and history in the industry to translate their designs to a perfect-fitting frame. The handmade process differs in many ways from mass production. Here are just a few important ones:
Better materials: natural acetate is longer lasting, more adjustable, holds more brilliant color and polishes to a finer gloss than petroleum plastic.
Materials II: Steel hinges are stronger and more adjustable than pot-metal parts. In this category, most all-metal frames are titanium for maximum weight-to-strength ratio and flexibility.
Handmade plastic frames are carved from solid acetate instead of being injection molded, meaning they respond much better to adjustment. They look shinier and feel better too.
Three weeks of polishing. Handmade acetate eyewear parts spend weeks tumbling in a drum with glass beads that polish the material to a deep shine, bringing out the full depth of colors and patterns.
Couture colors: InVision designers create new custom colors and patterns in acetate and metal for every seasonal collection. It’s cheaper to buy off-the-rack materials, but the results are never as beautiful or interesting as with couture.
Superior fit and finish. People often comment on how our glasses feel when you pick them up; you can literally feel the quality and attention to detail. It also means your expensive glasses are going (with some care) to still fit and look good after two to three years of daily wear.
Certain materials, like wood, buffalo horn and leather, require even more care and attention to detail that the handcrafting process allows. They demand highly specialized skills that only a handful of optical technicians possess, so one man or woman usually creates each piece from beginning to end.
Likewise, some designers approach the craft from a more artistic, less compromising perspective. DRIFT, Lucas De Staël, Robi Horn, Gold and Wood and Markus T. are unique personal expressions. Everyone in these tiny companies takes great care to fully realize the designer’s vision. Does it sound crazy to talk about glasses this way? Not if you know these companies, see the integrity with which these people do their work. Then, it’s the only fair way to talk about these glasses.
Design, craftsmanship, color.
Desperate for visual stimulation in Minnesota’s winter landscape we bathed these already vivid shades of Italian acetate in even more color. Now we’re feeling warm and hopeful! Join us in a super-saturated look at the latest release from our favorite French eyewear designers, Face à Face Paris.

The Three Rules of Fit and Other Tips
The First Rule of Fit is: try them on. Go ahead! If you don’t like them, they come right off. We can suggest a couple of general principles and things to look for in a frame, but nothing beats trying them on. If it looks good and feels good, it is good.
The Second Rule is: We want to see your eyes! Our eyes are such an important means of expression. The best fit accentuates, not obscures, them.
Third rule: we’re here to help. InVision opticians like helping people with styling choices and they’re really good at it. That said, here are a few things to consider when you’re looking for a new pair of glasses:
Don’t worry too much about what you are wearing, or colors you usually wear. Think more about your own coloring in skin-tone, hair and eyes. If a frame goes with your coloring, it will go with your clothes.
Think of frame color in terms of contrast. Colors that contrast sharply with your coloring will stand out more and accentuate any strong design features in the shape of the frame. More blending colors will soften any frame’s impact, so, in blending colors, you can wear stronger shapes.
Look around the edges. Photographers learn to look around the edges of the viewfinder when they compose a photo. In the same way, it helps to look around the edges of a eyeglass frame, looking for potential points of conflict with facial features.
With sunglasses, make sure you are covering your eyes adequately or you could be leaving yourself vulnerable to UV rays and eyestrain when too much light bounces in the sides of your frame.
Size and Scale are not the same thing. You can wear a big frame, but if you have a little face, pick a frame that is scaled properly for your features. It’ll have the attitude and pop of a big frame, without making you like you are playing dress-up.
Despite what the name suggests, digital lenses won’t get you online or take pictures, but they may help you see better. The first thing to know is: there’s really nothing digital about them. They just correct your vision with less distortion because they’re more highly customized for your specific eyes. They’re perfect for bifocals because they give your eyes a larger “sweet-spot” where your vision is just right. We also use them for wrap-around sunglasses, which can have distortion problems in the corners and they can even improve single-vision prescriptions.
Think about traditional lenses as an old tube television. It worked well enough, and the picture was OK—until you compared it to your new HD TV. Like the new TV technology, digital lenses increase clarity. Yaou’ll also feel less eye strain because they’ll have less peripheral distortion. If you’ve been putting off the switch to bifocals, or are just bored with your current glasses, stop in! Our opticians can answer your questions about digital lenses and help you find the perfect pair of frames to hold them!
5 Things to Know About Digital Lenses
- Digital lenses are lighter and thinner than traditional lenses.
- Additional labor associated with more custom work makes them a slightly more expensive than conventional lens designs, usually about $70 to $100 more.
- Digital lenses are available for any vision prescription and are the ideal choice for bifocal wearers.
- Digital lenses are manufactured across the full width of the lens, providing a wider field of crisp, clear vision (even peripherally!)
- Digital lenses are used in all frame shapes and sizes and can be left clear for everyday use or tinted for sunglasses.
